View from above: What used to be a raised bed of sorts, surrounded by a cement laid stone pathway gets shoveled out to fill in a shallow decline at the Northwestern edge of the upper yard. • Brit is the destroyer and the cultivator of plants and flowers. I'm more interested in building things. I build the raised beds and she plants things in them. She is always threatening to knock out walls while I'm at work.

As for inside vs. outside work, you take what the weather gives you. I think they counter balance each other. I like to have one main inside and one outside project going at a time to break things up.

In this picture, Tommy is the little blob of color at Brittany's feet. He can also be seen pictured in his command center, elsewhere on this site, smearing a teething cookie into his nose.

  • As far as your house being a disaster; we know all about that. Our house is sort of like that old Johnny Cash song - 'We did it one room at a time and it didn't cost us a' ... well, it cost us a lot more than a dime, but thats another story....

I should explain the situation in the yard a little more. I dug the shallow depression out and used the resulting fill to level the downslope part of the yard with the help of a small retaining wall. The depression will get a french drain, a layer of round rock, and then a layer of patio bricks that should come set up about two inches from the border path. Thats the plan anyway. One question I haven't answered yet is want to plant in the intervening inch gaps between the bricks. I'd like something that will stay green without much water, not spread over the bricks, and stand being walked on. I don't want to pack the borders between the bricks with anything less coarse than sand.
